New Engineers Gallery at the Science Museum Celebrates Innovation

South Kensington’s Science Museum has launched a new gallery showcasing how the work of engineers has changed the world – in areas from medicine to satellite technology.

Focusing on inspirational stories as well as objects, the gallery puts engineers themselves in the spotlight. It also highlights the many women working in the sector, dispelling the myth that engineering is ‘for boys’ and encouraging girls to consider a career in the field.

Engineers featured in the museum include software designer Tanda Kabanda, whose mission is to streamline the online shopping experience and Becky Shipley who helped millions of people with Covid-19 by developing, new non-invasive breathing masks.

Also in the biomedical field, the gallery highlights the work of George Frodsham, whose invention removes harmful components from blood to help patients with malaria, sepsis and cancer.

The gallery isn’t just about cutting-edge modern inventions. Iconic engineers from history have their place too, including Isaac Newton and James Watt. His humble kettle – thought to have helped his work developing steam engines and locomotives – is on display.

The exhibition also celebrates the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, which recognises modern innovations, with the work of previous winners on show.

Sir Ian Blatchford, director and chief executive of the Science Museum said: “Everyday life depends on the skills and creativity of engineers. In bringing this fabulous new gallery to life, we’re delighted to be working with the Queen Elizabeth Prize, whose recognition of some of the most brilliant minds and important innovations of our time is so vital. I know our many visitors will be inspired by the stories they will encounter.’
