Motcomb Street’s History & Architecture

Motcomb Street was developed in the 1820s and was built as part of the Grosvenor Estate, forming the early foundations of Belgravia.

Initially, Motcomb Street was predominantly residential but over time it has evolved into one of the most iconic shopping destinations in London.

The architectural style along Motcomb St is largely defined by stucco-fronted facades and Georgian townhouses. The pedestrianised street gives the area a village-like feel in one of the most prestigious parts of central London.

The central feature is the Pantechnicon, a stunning Grade II listed building featuring a Greek Revival neoclassical facade.

Built in 1834, the building recently underwent a major restoration project, which included the development of a new glazed rooftop pavilion. The five-storey building, known as 19 Motcomb Street, is now home to luxury retailers and high-end restaurants such as Sachi and Cafe Kitsune.

High-end Fashion and Jewellery Boutiques

Motcomb Street is famous for its selection of luxury fashion boutiques and exclusive footwear stores such as Louise Kennedy, Harrys of London, Sellier and Nicola Donati, attracting celebrities and fashionistas from around the world.

Couture womenswear can be acquired from the designer store Stewart Parvin and for tailor-made suits, book an appointment at Gio Genco. Meanwhile, exquisite jewellery store Carolina Bucci sits next door, where you will find unique pieces and stunning collections.

Luxury lingerie brand Coco de Mer’s boutique opened in 2024 and independent boutique Clio Peppiatt are recent additions to Motcomb Street’s retail offering.

If you are shopping for a designer handbag, be sure to pay a visit to Tissa Fontaneda London, which is at no. 8 Motcomb Street.

You will also find the renowned Harvey Nichols and Harrods department stores close by.

Fine Dining and Chic Cafés

After a morning of sightseeing or shopping, you can relax in one of the cafes or treat yourself to a meal at one of the refined restaurants on or around Motcomb Street.

Mediterranean restaurant Mina’s offers delights such as sharing platters, moules frites and grilled salmon salad, as well as a tempting cocktail menu.

Café Kitsuné is the perfect place for a pastry pick-me-up, or to sample the egg sando for breakfast. Café Kitsuné is located in the same building as the original Pantechnicon, along with Amelie and Luum.

Meanwhile, ‘Indian-style tapas’ can be sampled at Michelin-starred Amaya, one of the most sophisticated Indian eateries in London. Pétrus by Gordon Ramsay is another fine dining option just around the corner on Kinnerton Street. Le Café NAC opened its doors in 2025, bringing Parisian cuisine to Motcomb Street, serving menu favourites such as truffle rigatoni and Harissa chicken salads.

Bars and Pubs

If you want to continue your Motcomb Street experience into the evening, there are some delightful bars and traditional pubs in the area. The Wilton Arms on nearby Kinnerton Street serves British classics such as beer battered haddock and chips, and the Sunday lunch menu is very popular with local residents.

Motcomb Street is also home to gastropub The Alfred Tennyson, where you can enjoy a few drinks or book a table in the dining room to try dishes such as beef cheek and stilton pie or roast lamb rump. The Star Tavern on Belgrave Mews is also a great place to grab a drink and bite to eat, while marvelling at the stunning chandeliers. This intriguing pub has a long history and was frequented by notorious criminals in the 1960s.

But what about groceries?

Motcomb Street has a Waitrose, there is a Sainsburys Local close by on Brompton Road, and much more besides. Italian deli Olivino Deli is close by on Lower Belgrave St where you can buy fresh Italian food ingredients, cooked meats and wine.

You won’t go hungry, whether you’re sourcing produce to cook at home or in search of sustenance at a pub, bar or local café. Motcomb Street knows how to spoil its visitors.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out what my property near Motcomb Street is worth?

The most reliable route is a valuation from a local agent who sells in Belgravia regularly. Values here vary sharply between a mews house, a stucco-fronted townhouse and a flat. Online asking prices rarely match achieved prices. Agents like Best Gapp will inspect your home in person and compare it against recent sales on neighbouring streets.

Which tube stations serve Motcomb Street, and what does that mean for commuters?

Knightsbridge and Hyde Park Corner stations both sit a short walk away, and both lie on the Piccadilly line. That gives residents a direct link to Heathrow and King’s Cross St Pancras. Victoria station, a short journey from most of Belgravia, adds national rail options for longer commutes.

Why does the Grosvenor Estate matter when buying near Motcomb Street?

Motcomb Street formed part of the Grosvenor Estate, which shaped much of Belgravia from the 1820s. Many homes in the area still carry long leasehold terms rather than freehold ownership. You should check the remaining lease length, ground rent and any estate management rules before committing to a purchase.

Can I alter a period home or flat close to the Pantechnicon?

Listed buildings, such as the Grade II listed Pantechnicon, need listed building consent for most changes inside and out. Unlisted Georgian and Victorian properties nearby may also fall within a conservation area, which restricts external work such as replacing windows. Check a property’s status with the local planning authority before you plan any alteration
