Westminster Council Tax Updates for 2026-27 

Westminster City Council’s tax is set to remain among the lowest in the country, after releasing the borough’s council tax rates for 2026-27. With cost of living pressures adding up, residents may wonder how their bills are set to change. Westminster City Council has frozen the borough’s main council tax component for the year ahead, and provided further details affecting other portions.  

The Westminster element makes up around half of residents’ total council tax charges. Part of this is the adult social care precept, which will rise by less than 2%, working out at around 20p for Band D. Areas like Queen’s Park ward and Montpelier Square incur an additional precept. The remainder is allocated to the Greater London Authority (GLA), and this element is set to rise by 4.1% for 2026-27, equating to £20.13 on Band D properties. The exact amount renters and homeowners will pay depends on the property’s council tax band, as determined by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). 

Westminster City Council leader, Cllr Adam Hug, said: “Due to strong financial management, reinventing the way the Council works and our track record of delivering outstanding services that are value for money, we can keep on target with a string of major investments to make life better for residents.” 

Those investments, referenced in a statement issued by the council, include: £8 million for high street improvements in Paddington and Bayswater; £3.8 million to improve and modernise the Pimlico Station and Lupus Street area; and £34m investment to make Regent Street “safer, greener, more accessible and inclusive”.  

Further projects are set to focus on community projects and wellbeing, while others are expected to bring new affordable homes to several areas of Westminster. As a popular destination for tourists, the council is also campaigning for the City of Westminster to benefit from the proposed overnight levy. This would then be fed back into the community, with a focus on providing homes and improved streets for residents and local business.
